As a Sign Language Interpreter in a school setting, you will facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and school staff. You will play a critical role in ensuring equal access to educational content and social interactions throughout the school day.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide sign language interpreting services (e.g., ASL) in classroom and school-related settings
- Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, and staff
- Support student access to instruction, activities, and social interactions
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional and ethical standards
- Adapt interpreting style based on student needs and educational environment
- Participate in team meetings and school-based collaboration as needed
- Minimum EIPA score of 3.5+ (required for school-based interpreters in PA)
- State registration with the Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (ODHH) OR eligibility to obtain
- RID/NIC certification (preferred)
- Experience interpreting in an educational setting (preferred)
- Strong understanding of Deaf culture and communication modalities
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
